2013 Frame News - Double Cross Disc

We have finally discontinued the Double Cross DC, which had sported  both disc brake and canti brake mounts and have moved on to a disc only Double Cross. We are calling the new color "Old Gold". Despite being gold, it isn't at all gaudy. We wanted it to look like gold that has faded after years in the sun. The canti-only "traditional" model is still quite popular and will still be made (no color change for that).
- Lightweight and resilient Tange Prestige double-butted heat-treated CrMo steel front triangle; butted and tapered CrMo rear stays
- Clearance for 700 x 38c tires with fenders (42c w/o fenders)
- Compatible with old school downtube shifters
- Optional matching straight blade fork available
- Sizes: 42 to 62 and 66cm

Available in most sizes late December 2012.

nice. not in love with the color, but the disc only is welcome. is this gonna happen to the juice frame as well?

and whats the recommended fork length and rake to go with this new double cross?

I like it! Too bad I can't justify a new bike in my stable right now.

Great frame but this is a very bad choice of color. I hope you keep the black as an alternative.

Is the new color choice set in stone? I've been saving up for a DC DC but I gotta be honest, the gold color is a deal breaker.

visatI like the new color. I like having something not everyone one else has. On top of that I am think it could look great with Black Tape and Seat, Brown tape and seat or White Tape and seat. Kudos for not looking like all the other bikes.

My only question, is it finally a 135? The 132.5 is a turn off for me. I understand the reason, but now that is is disc specific, that reason is gone.

I should elaborate. I like the color and how it is different, I just don't think it's right for this bike. It would be much better on something like the Stanyan. If you considering two of the most likely uses for the Double Cross, as a cross bike, the gold is going to look ridiculous caked in mud, and as a commuter, the gold is an attention getter that just screams "STEAL ME!"

Yes, finally a disc only option. Glad I held off on my next build, looks great!

As the post mentioned the color is not that bright in real life. We hope you guys might feel differently after seeing a built version on the streets (we will post when done).
We were inspired by the color off a Godio beater/road bike a co-worker had. It's beauty was subtle, not flashy.

We think in a world with bright orange Publics, multi hued track bikes, and large logo'd fat tubed road bikes you may find that the "old gold" DCD doesn't attract the wrong type of attn as much as you think it might.
Thanks for your honest feedback though.

@anonymous FORK LENGTH/RAKE: 400mm/44mm rake same as last year.

@michael- it is still 132.5. there aren't too many 130mm disc wheels out there, but there are still some being made. When possible, we like our frames to be compatible with a range of parts, so people don't feel forced to upgrade if they have working parts in their garage.

I had an early '80s Schwinn Le Tour Luxe in a similar cooler...definitely agree--"its beauty was subtle, not flashy."

I'm torn tho...will the discontinued DCDC's be getting discounted now too??

I know this might be unpopular, and maybe it's totally off the mark for the average Soma customer, but I really think that all these steel disc cross bikes coming to market should move to a 44mm headtube, so as to allow use of the new carbon disc forks. Right now, the only carbon disc options with a straight 1 1/8" steerer tube are clunky, heavy ones with aluminum steerer tubes.

full carbon cx fork with straight 1-1/8 steerer

The color is horrible.. please re-consider the color. The paint looks very Walmart. I am unable to purchase if this is the color.

The problem with this color is lack of customizing potential. People now have access to parts in an array of colors they can order online. They want to personalize their bikes. The only thing you can do with a frame like this is silver parts and a black saddle/black tape. Any colored part on a gold frame would look horrid. Imagine white rims on here. Or red bar tape. Or a blue saddle. Very disappointing

@Anonymous November 6, 2012 7:27 PM,

That fork clearly has an aluminum steerer tube.

Whoops, looked at the wrong item. Thanks for the link, anonymous.

That carver fork unfortunately is still a bit of a pig at 630g though, carbon steerer or not. The Whisky 7 tapered fork is 459g. Not sure this is the frame you'd build if you're a weight weenie though. :)

That fork is in need of some low-rider braze-ons.

And yes, 135 spacing would be nice.

44mm headtubes are hideous; glad that this is straight 1-1/8". not dealbreaker, but space it at 135 for the next batch. old gold color is not bad.

I'm bucking the trend. I love, Love, LOVE that color. Excellent choice.

The gold is bad. It looks like a crappy Gunnar color scheme. ugh. This frame is badass so make it black! And I agree 44mm head tube is now mandatory. Don't be like Surly and refuse to implement current frame tech! If you are going disc only it seems to be logical to also implement the bigger head tube to just have everything current. This frame is great and I want one but the gold is making me ill.

This is a commuter bike at best. If you buy this frame to race, you will most likely be bummed! I had to simple my chain stay so my crank would clear because the bottom bracket area was so flexy. I also had to file the frame and brake caliper to fit the rear brake. There is very little shoulder space for portaging.
